Relocating to a new area is an adventure—one filled with excitement, questions, and opportunities. When I moved to the Triad region of North Carolina from the bustling West Coast, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Now, years later, I’m thrilled to share my experience with you and highlight what makes the Triad an incredible place to call home.

Affordable Housing

One of the biggest surprises for me was how much more affordable housing is in the Triad compared to the West Coast. Back in Seattle, we lost out on multiple homes, even after offering over the asking price. Here, we reduced our budget significantly and were able to purchase a larger home with a bigger lot—something we could only dream of before. Whether you're looking for a historic charmer, a new build, or a spacious suburban retreat, the Triad has options to fit every budget.

More Space, Less Stress

If you’ve been craving more room to spread out, you’ll love the Triad. Homes and lots here are generally larger, giving you the space to live and grow. Traffic? Say goodbye to the daily gridlock! While you might encounter the occasional tractor slowing things down in the suburbs, most highways and roads are free-flowing, and you can typically get across town in 20 minutes or less.

Convenient Location

The Triad’s central location is a dream for explorers. It’s about 3.5 hours to the stunning beaches, 2.5 hours to the mountains, and just 1.5 hours to larger metropolitan cities like Raleigh and Charlotte. Greensboro’s airport also offers direct flights to major cities across the country, making visiting family or planning vacations a breeze.

Southern Charm & Culture

Moving here, I quickly learned that the Triad is not just East Coast—it’s the South! From pimento cheese sandwiches to smoked brisket, the food is as delightful as the people. And yes, the southern accent is alive and well! You’ll also pick up on charming regional terms like “buggie” (grocery cart) and “toboggan” (winter hat).

Four Beautiful Seasons

Coming from a dry climate, I wasn’t sure how I’d handle the humidity. But the summers here are manageable, and the lush greenery makes it worth it. Spring in Greensboro is breathtaking (though you’ll want to keep allergy meds handy), and you’ll enjoy true fall foliage and mild winters.

Community & Amenities

The Triad offers a little something for everyone:

  • Schools: Public and private schools, as well as renowned universities like Wake Forest, UNCG, and High Point University.

  • Fitness and Wellness: Gyms, pools, country clubs, and spas abound.

  • Equine Facilities: Horse riding and boarding options are plentiful, especially in areas like Oak Ridge.

  • Arts and Culture: Enjoy local theaters, museums, and galleries in Winston-Salem and beyond.

  • Dining and Shopping: From Summerfield Farms to the charming restaurants of Jamestown, every community has its own flavor.

Things I’ve Learned

Moving across the country wasn’t without its challenges. I had moments of homesickness and uncertainty, but the welcoming community and vibrant lifestyle quickly reassured me. If you’re considering a move, know that change can be intimidating, but it’s also a chance to grow and thrive.
